We would like to make an acknowledgement of one of the true gentlemen and innovators of the 'trailer sailer' genre in this country, Mr Des Webb. Des is kindly providing us with advice as we progress through the build of the 50th Anniversary Hartley TS21 trailer sailer.
Des was one of the founding members of the National Hartley TS18-21 Club and was responsible for many innovative improvements to the TS18 and TS21 boats and to sailing/cruising in general.
One of Des's many improvements was the masthead rig configuration for the TS18 and TS21, an idea Richard Hartley approved himself and included as an official rig option in all his TS18 and TS21 plans/designs world wide.
Richard and Des got along famously, always in close communication with one another in the 70's and 80's with the common goal being to improve the Hartley TS18 and TS21.
Des has built a TS16, TS18 and TS21 and has also designed his own trailer sailers, first the Water Line 21 and 23 then the Waterway 23.
Des is in his very senior years now and is a very friendly and genuine fellow. He is the closest thing to having a real connection with the heart and soul of the Hartley TS21 design. Therefore it is wonderfully fitting that the Hartley TS21 being specifically built to commemorate Australia's 50th anniversary of the 'trailer sailer' is being gently helped along on its journey of creation with advice from Mr Des Webb.
Des has written a great many articles for the Hartley TS18-21 Club's monthly newsletter "Windward". The Club's monthly newsletter itself is always a great read by the way.
Recently it was decided that such was the scale and depth of Des's contributions that they were to be collected and published as an indexed publication in their own right.
The publication is called 'The Trailable-Yacht Companion Waterway to Windward'. In my opinion it is a must have resource for all existing and future trailer sailer owners. It is a seriously good book.
The publication is available directly from the Hartley TS18-21 Club for around $40.00 which includes postage and handling.
To purchase please contact the Hartley TS18-21 Club's Treasurer and Editor, Mr Rod Lake on 03 5981 8598. You can also contact the Club directly via their website Hartley TS18-21 Yacht Club Inc.
All proceeds from the sale of the book go directly to the Hartley TS18-21 Club Inc. in order to improve services for all current and future members - a kind gesture courtesy of Mr Des Webb.
